Missing the Porch Light: The Hidden Challenge of Full-Time RV Life
This adventure is such a blessing. What I didn’t fully expect, though, was the quiet grief that comes with leaving “home” behind. I admit- I miss the porch light.
One Year After Someday
Somewhere between the Jamestown Ferry in Virginia and the Lewis and Clark National Park on the west coast we honed our appreciation of the smaller moments that add up to a calendar year. We have learned that sometimes the perspective has to be adjusted for the eyes to behold.
Move Day Magic (and Mayhem): Life on the Road in an RV
After completing the tear-down process, with rubber gloves disposed and a stinky slinky stowed, I de-crouched out from under the bedroom slide and massaged my lower back. I silently ruminated, “I don’t recall seeing this particular online post properly articulating the dream of hitting the open road.” Not the start of move day that I was hoping for.
Tight Squeeze
With one more tight squeeze and parking experience to add to the road rash we’re another step removed from rookie status and working toward seasoned veteran.
Sensory Overload
So how in the world did I find myself standing at the base of St. Helens thinking…meh, that’s nice.
From Chaos to Clarity
All of that stuff, all of those scheduled events, took up space and time. It was like I was on one side of the room and Donelle was on the other. We could wave at each other easily enough but it sure was hard to hold hands.
Embrace the Hack
Laying on my back in the pass-through storage compartment of our camper, wearing a headlamp and testing the limits of my own contortionability, I was trying to track down the source of a slow drip on the back side of our water control panel. A months-long dribblet bent on maintaining a shallow puddle where I want only desert. Oh what I would have given for a golden nugget of knowledge to remedy the issue. I need a hack.
What’s in a Name?
We had a solid question come in on our Facebook page asking why we chose Team Hinty. While we may have labored long and hard over naming a vehicle or a family pet, we settled on the identity of our online presence and business fairly quickly.
Connections and Relationships
After a month on the road, despite being surrounded in campgrounds full of people, it surprised me how lonely I had become for friendship. James and I are best friends and I adore traveling with him. And yet, other individuals and personalities also fill an important void. After talking with a few other campers, I found that I was not alone in this feeling.
Creepy Crawlers
There was a shriek from the living room that made me bolt down the three stairs, grabbing a towel along the way for a certain clean-up of something. Thankfully, it was only my big, strong husband coming face to face with a spider. While we disagree on the size of the arachnid, as it grows an inch or two in each retelling, that spider reminded me of all the “nature” we have encountered along our journey so far.
